i write my notes in chalk on backs of shovels

10/25/10

I have an oddly “right under your nose” code word question for you today: what specific devices are you currently using to… well, “compute” and access the internet these days? In other words, what exact model computer, laptop, netbook and/or phone?

If anything can become an instant time capsule for 5 years hence, this is it. I’ll give you mine:

Macbook Pro 17″ (i7 processor, 8GB RAM for photo/music work)

iPad 64GB (3G version, for travel, Lucy, music, and video)

iPhone 3GS (I covet Tessa’s iPhone 4)

Yes, I’ve long been a gadgeteering zork. And you?

    iMac 21″, 3GHz Core 2 Duo with 8GB RAM
iPad 16GB (WiFi only, darn it)
Macbook 13″, but I’ve only used it once since I got the iPad in June — I must say, the iPad is pretty darned amazing, and it is much more useful than I expected it to be.
And… iPhone 2G. Jason says he will get me an iPhone 4 if I can find a good deal on an unlocked one (we have T-Mobile).
I have been an Apple fangirl since the mid-80s, of course… but it’s sure nicer to be one now than it was about 15 years ago. ;)

    Home: Apple Mini (love it)
Work: Dell Latitude D410 (HATE IT – old and awful)
Netbook: Dell Mini 9 (like it, except the quote key is in the wrong place, which drives me nuts)
Phone: Palm Pre (love it, except it eats battery)

On-the-Road and at home: MacBook Pro 15″ – 4G RAM
At Home: Dell circa 2002, with upgraded RAM and well cared for. Sorry, it’s not in front of me so I don’t know the specs. I am just proud to say she still runs great!
    At Work: Dell Optiplex 330 w/Intel 2 Duo 2.53GHz 4GB RAM
Phone (used A LOT to access internet): Motorola DROID, only because I tired of waiting for the iPhone to come to Verizon. (Read: I hate AT&T more than I want an iPhone). When they finally come, however, I may just switch again. I am peeved that I can’t get my DROID to successfully sync with my Outlook calendar at work. What’s the point?

Home computer–a Frankenstein PC that’s on the last legs of the cadaver computer parts from which it was made.
Laptop–Lenovo Thinkpad T400s procured for work (and Fantasty Football StatTracker on the weekends) in January 2010.
    Phone–Blackberry Tour
iPod–regular 80 gig one with the wheel and half screen. Not the iPod touch.
No iPad, Kindle, or smaller-than-a-laptop computer of any size, though my wife loves her Kindle.

iMac at both home and work. Big screen.
No smartphone! Just an LG with a flip-open keyboard for texting. I purposely did not get the Internet option. If it’s urgent, people can call me. If not, it can wait until I check my email at work or home.
Music: older iPod that I really don’t use much. I’m still burning CDs!

I JUST retired my Mac 15 inch Powerbook G4 from 2005 because it couldn’t carry the OS required to pull off a sync with my iPhone4. As a stop gap measure I’m using my boyfriend’s company’s castoff 2y/o 13inch Macbook until I can pull off purchasing a new rig.
My next mac will either be the 13inch Macbook Pro or the loaded 13inch MacBookAir.

MacBookPro 15″. Don’t ask me about the RAM and all that gobblydegook. I so don’t know it off the top of my head and I don’t feel like looking it up even though I could do it in less time than typing the end of this sentence. And my iPhone is the 3GS. Ce tout. But I need a new printer/scanner/copier that is not huge so if anyone has a recommendation….

work: some PC desktop I have to use, but has one great feature: dual displays. I really like this and it saves me from printing things out.
phone: cheapie T Mobile flip phone. Will see about a smart phone for Xmas.
I just started using Evernote this week, do any of you use it? Looking for ideas about how to use it.

I use Evernote for a few things. One is organizing story tips and ideas for the neighborhood news blog we run. Another is for keeping track of ideas and information for a volunteer job I do.
It works pretty well for me. I can write up notes for the volunteer job on my desktop computer, then take the iPad with me to a meeting and the notes have synced, and so they are right there with me without me even having to think about it much.
Also, I have it on my iPhone too, so, really, I never have to be without my notes. That has been pretty useful.
